    Making Oil???

    Hey Guys & Gals.....

This has happened twice and I cannot explain it!!??

I changed to oil and filter carefully adding oil to the engine until exactly at the "Full" mark....BTW it is about 6 quarts!!

I drive the car about a week and check the oil and it is 1/4 inch OVER "FULL"???

At first I thought I just added too much but this time (last week) I let it sit for 30 minutes and topped it up to "Full"!! Now it is 1/4 inch over again??

I'm gonna drop about a pint out and get the level down to between "Full" & "Add" to see what happens??

    Any ideas??

Also, it ain't gas from "Blow-by".......oil is clean and no gas odor!!

    Whatcha think??

Jack it is proabably thermal expansion of the oil. When you put in new oil the car and the oil is dead cold (ambient). As you check it later, the oil is likely hot and therefore takes up more volume than ambient oil.

Regarding draining a pint out. Fuhgitabout it. That little extra won't hurt anything.

    ^^^what Don said^^^

I had the same issue with my '94 T-bird...if I put in the whole 5 qts (it had the 3.8L) immediately, and then checked it a day or two later, it would be over-full. I learned to put in 4.5 Qts and check it the following weekend and top off as necessary at that time. From then on, it would be fine. To get consistent readings, I try to always check the oil level under the same conditions each time, like after it's sat in the driveway overnight.

I figured it might be the thermal expansion thing.....Not a big deal but curious!!

BTW......I always check it at the same spot in the driveway so at least that is consistant!!
