Thread: 4 more pounds of boost from where?

  1. #1

Question 4 more pounds of boost from where?

Got my car back yesterday from one of the backwood mechs around here .when he was replacing my valve cover gaskets he put the elbow into the supercharger and letf it rubbing the radiator till it started to leak so he had it for a week to fix it.Anyways when i drove it home last night i stepped on it and the boost gauge was pegged at 20lbs.First time i ever saw it that high.it was normally at 16. How the heck did it 4 more pounds of boost? maybe the cold air? Or maybe because its sucking unmetered air.any suggestions?

But boyee it felt f*****g strong

Unmetered air at that boost level should have went boom. I doubt it was unmetered air. I like sails' answer. Belt was slipping before, maybe?

If he was replacing VC gaskets, the upper intake must have been off. I had a small boost leak at my upper intake due to a stripped bolt. I got a longer bolt and hunkered her down. It was leaking about 1psi at WOT (10 TOTAL psi), but wouldn't build over 9 with the leak. Perhaps you HAD a boost leak and don't anymore?

That's odd. Usually when I give a car back to a customer it is showing less boost but is actually going faster because changes were made to improve the airflow through the engine.

More boost would scare me into thinking that there is a restriction somewhere. Unless there was actually a leak, a lot of belt slippage before or a problem with the gauge or sending unit either then or now.

It may just be the cold if it is 4lbs more. Is the gauge actually pegged or is it sitting on 20?

In other words, is it out of the range of the gauge you have and maybe showing more than an extra 4lbs?

I'm running 10.5psi in my stang @6000rpm. Colder days I noticed it'll be around 11.5-12.

4psi is a pretty big jump? Maybe you had some sort of belt slip especially with 16-20psi.
