View Full Version : Possible EGR/DPFE issue?

Lately when I come to a stop, my engine would either idle smooth as glass or it will idle a bit rough. It changes back and forth everytime I come to a stop. I notice that in the cooler temps it idles smoother and then when it warms up it idles rougher.
I also can't confirm if it was the road surface or a shudder, but in Carlisle I was in 4th with the convertor locked and I felt a slight shudder at part throttle. I also noticed a very slight shudder when I give it partial throttle coming off a stop.
I have less the 3K miles on my plugs, COPS, and the recent trans service. Im ruling out transmission due to the idle changes, and Im ruling out the coils and plugs. The only part thats all original is the EGR/DPFE and it has almost 71K miles. I hear these things stick open and will effect idle and cause a shudder if they are starting to fail.

Does this sound accurate?

If it is stuck open at idle it will cause rough running, but at part throttle cruise it shouldn't make a difference as it should be open. It shouldn't be open at WOT but the only thing that should cause is less power since the cyl will not fully fill with fresh A/F mix. It's not a bad idea to remove it and clean it with a little carb cleaner to see if that helps. You can sometimes get carbon build up that prevents it from closing fully.

I had to fix that on the '04 CV when it was out in San Diego in '09.
It threw a code and caused a rough idle/low idle and stumble on aceleration. Also stalled a couple of times on deceleration. It was throwing a code for the DPFE but the EGR?DPFE are one unit.

If it had vacume advance I would say there is a problem with it sticking from what your describing so far Paul.

Data log what your timing is doing vs your throttle position reading and RPM's just for ha ha's.

I just ordered one for you, I'll even deliver it for a cold beer.
