View Full Version : Big Brakes on a not-so-big Budget? YEP

Keep in mind my Calipers were modified by Baer. The calipers you will get from NAPA may say Corvette on them....Im not sure.
No more 500 dollar rotor replacements. No more $1400+ big brake price tags.
Off the shelf parts, easy recipe to make this yourself, why did it take me 10 years? :shake:
Edit 4/7/17: SO MANY PM'S asking where to buy the brackets and lines.

Todd@TCE for the lines.

what are the chances the GT500 rotors are close enough to fit with an already existing Baer kit?
Nope. Almost a 1/4 difference in offset
How about something for the rears?
I'm going to look into that next but having a functioning parking brake and keeping it relatively inexpensive is probably not going to be possible
Very bad ass. Are these the 14" rotors?
Yes they are, from a 2010 listing
I am still exploring other calipers that are better, but they are so wide on the outboard portion we would need new wheels for sure
The brackets for this with a gt500 rotor changed on both the x and Y axis. It's not a Baer duplicate by any means

I'm finding the semi-loaded calipers at about $60 with a $75 core, ones without the Corvette wording on them. It would be easy to get away with throwing our original calipers in the box as cores.

Nope
Not quite seeing the value there Zack. You're at $100 without all of the adapters and only half the hoses. Seems to me you're short two hoses, three adapters, two banjos, two banjo bolts and four crush washers- you'd be north of $200 pretty quickly. And nowhere in there were any anchor brackets- those adapter have to fit into something.
And the combo of all that means five junctions: hardline to adapter, adapter to hose, hose to banjo, banjo to banjo bolt, banjo to caliper. That's a lot of things to have issues with.
No beef by me here, just saying I'm not following the math on this one. If you want to do a qty of them from me for your proposed 'kit' I'd be happy to help you.

While this does seem to be a good DIY project, and one can build it over time, thus spreading the cost out over a period of time, I am a "I want it right now" kind of guy, and will just pay the freight for a kit.
I do think Todd is right, once all the nickle and dime things start adding up, the price will climb, but all in all, I think it is great for the guy who wants to fab some of his own parts and such.
For now I'll keep my Wilwood's, but if there is a better solution, I may be persuaded into trying something different....
Good work, to both of you guy's.
Brackets would be 9 more dollars.
This is for the front only. I can see if an aftermarket line will work in the caliper inlet. But remember, BAER modified the caliper with an additional hole so the stock line could be used
I don't understand what you guys think will nickel and dime this.
I posted the prices of everything in the first post, less brackets and bolts.
There is nothing more to it, period

I think if it can be pulled off for that, it would be great. But between house and car projects, I know how budget's wind up taking a back seat.... I am referring to myself and no one else, your mileage may vary.

Having them coated locally is an option, but depending on the finish they have they may need to be stripped or blasted, which may also require them to be disassembled and rebuilt. All of which increases turn around time and is inconvenient. Where as precoated calipers would be extremely convienent and have the potential to be more cost effective.
Still, if no other option is possible local will work.

I'm at $649 using Wearevers from Advance Auto Parts (IIRC they are lifetime), and $567 going cheap-ass on RockAuto without warranty. That's all-in with bolts, brackets, hoses, and fittings; shipped.
The question is: does buying the cheaper rotors/pads/calipers negate the whole point of doing this project?

Cheaper is always better, that's why Gov't always goes with low bid, because the quality is better.
Then I look at this thread, and I see many people who made fun of a certain member for cutting corners on his Marauder, doing the same thing. What do you mean by cheaper rotors? As long as they are the correct fitment for the gt500. Cheaper rotors will be more prone to warp and wear but overall effectiveness shouldn't be much different.

I don't think price is a real driving force if your already in 5-600. Don't get me wrong, the first things I research out are the highest dollar amount and have no problem at all saving up for it and I normally prefer the best at any cost. Thanks for the effort on this! I am on vacation so buying and searching parts will not happen right now (though looking at MM.net is!); but when I get home it is shopping time.
Question on the brackets? Do we need to send you a core or anything like that?
Slotted gt500 rotors are astronomically priced.
Got one brake line done. About 1/2 inch from the tire at full turn, but I have a 255 up front. 235's will be a dandy fit

I have a 255 up front. I had 255/55/18 on the Marq and it rubbed like a MFer.
I will have to call Federated and see what their price/brands are. Sometimes they're surprising.
Finished up and drove it. It works!
It needs more bleeding though, but even with a spongy pedal the braking is so much better with no fade. More when I bleed the brakes again (tomorrow because my helper isn't home)

Zack, you may have misread my intention of the question.
I know you are a smart guy, just wondered why you chose the components you did, and what you would do different next time.
If I lived at Jegs, I would try everything.
It's simple to make a brake line when the wheel is pointing straight ahead.
When you turn the wheel, the line does wierd things.
There are many engineering factors that go into making an Oem or aftermarket brake line
I have tell you guys this stuff so I can sleep at night.
The last thing I want anyone to do is use the parts I recommended and install them improperly. Positioning is everything, and time needs to be spent making sure nothing touches a moving part in every aspect of wheel travel.

No. Baer machines a new hole in their kits to retain the stock line geometry.
That just isn't feasible here, unless you want to have it done by a machine shop.

If one were careful to clean all the metal out of the caliper it could be drilled and tapped for proper port fitting at home.
Corvette caliper port fitting is 10x1mm ours is 3/8-24, simply drill and tap in the same location of the caliper that baer did.

Yes but you also have to machine a perfectly flat portion for the crush washer to seat. (You probably don't need to, but that's the correct way)

Yes. I also use them and the rotors on my work E250. With it always fully loaded, constantly cut off in traffic, and me driving, I can vouch its a no questions asked warranty..
I only tried them on my stuff because I get home delivery and it's convenient. Simply put I expected average and the results far exceeded that, even on old unturned rotors.

I'm also reasonably sure I know the answer to this, but any chance of developing some to work on 02- panthers as well? I know the market isn't as big as it is for the 03+/Marauder, but you could probably sell a few of them

Keep the IDS tool bleed in the back of your mind. I drove around for a year with an "acceptable" pedal feel after doing a big brake upgrade. It is pretty easy to get air in the ABS after having the brakes open like that. After an IDS bleed pedal feel went from OK to correct.
Good job on the creative engineering, looking forward to drive test and wear (pad transfer, pulsing) observations after 5K - 10K miles.

Drove it around a bit. Stops good.
However, I really think my car needs an IDS bleed
There is too much mush in the pedal IMHO
Will get that done as soon as time allows
Drive another 15 miles. It's starting to stop REALLY well
I don't even have 100% pad contact yet.

OK so BigM460 runs stock caliper but 20" wheels. Zack's set-up keeps stock wheels.GT500 rears are only around .200 bigger to much work for to little. Zack's set-up looks like a win to me!
Things to know:
You will need to grind down the aluminum so the bracket sits correctly and the bolts thread in. Pretty self explanatory.... When you can thread the bolts in, you have ground down enough.
Also, look closely to the pic. You will need to grind a small relief where I did so the abutment bracket sits perfectly.
(My holes were enlarged for the cobra brakes on the car before this. Yours will not look this way)

Any thoughts on a dust shield? GT500/modified MM
Vortech347
06-30-2014, 10:51 AM
Why? you'll have better cooling without the shield. Unless you go off-roading frequently with your Marauder don't worry about it.
Im driving the car to work tomorrow and most likely having the IDS bleed done after work.

I'm not fully getting where it needs to be grinded, I get the part about notching the ear to allow room for the bracket, but can you be more specific about the first part?

Watching this thread closely. I started planning this about a year ago as one of my friends imported a bunch of billet brake calipers from Australia and was doing conversions on to Nissan 240sx and also installing LS2 engines in them. He later used Nissan 370 brakes. He did all the machining. He offered to make the adapters for my car. I was looking at these Mercedes 4 piston calipers that only cost $61.75.
The next step I was going to take was to get my hands on a extra spindle that we could do the mock up on.
I will wait and see how this turns out.
I assume 14" is the biggest we can go in rotor size?
Does anyone have a spindle they want to sell?

Dumb question. Why can't your bracket be modified instead of grinding material off our cars? What if someone decides to put their old calipers back on?
lji372
07-01-2014, 06:57 PM
..................
The Baer kit requires the exact same grinding. And yes, you can re-install your stock calipers if you so choose.
I'm still at work, going on 19 hours now. I managed to get out to do the IDS brake bleed
Good and bad news. My pedal is now low and all the symptoms of a bad master cylinder are present.
However, if while coming to a stop I lightly pump the brakes a few times, the car nose dives to a stop.
The brakes work, well.
Modify with confidence!

You arent trashing anything, just doing some grinding.
You can go back to stock and you will never know anything was done. Just rivet the dust shield back on and that's it.

Hah, you don't know me and tools very well, lol. I always like to keep a second set of anything I'm attempting to work on. Wish I could do that with an engine.
It seems easy enough. Will be PM'ing lji372 for the brackets soon.

Man I just got so excited, I had a 2014 Police Interceptor Taurus come in, and I started looking at the brakes, then measurements, spec's, prices, more specs, then shot down.
Rotors are 352mm X 32.0mm (13.85" X 1.25") ie referred to as 14in brakes in WSM
Calipers are two piston, aluminum, sized for 14", and maintain the same port angle/location/thread size
Brakes are the same for both HD/SHO Taurus and HD/Sport Explorers. Rotors are competitively priced, and calipers are even much cheaper than the corvette, replacement parts will be available for a long time, performance parts are already available with more and more all the time, the matched caliper and rotor will keep fitment issues to a minimum, the caliper sits with more than a fingerlength space between it and the 18" steel wheel, but caliper fitment would still need to be checked. Painted calipers from the SHO and Explorer Sport are obtainable.
So got into more specs and sizing, lug spacing the same, stud size the same, but centerbore is where everything goes wrong. The 2011+ Explorer/Taurus have a 63mm hub centerbore compared to our 71mm, meaning the rotors wont fit over our hub centerbore. So unless someone wants to cut/machine a larger bore in the rotors, they wont work. The calipers though might be a good option, since they are same/larger than the corvette, maintain the same port location as ours, and are just as cost effective, and would still fit over the gt500 rotor.
Maybe something you guys are interested in looking into?

Yea .003" is nothing compared to .3"(71mm-63mm)
Not sure how much the rotor offset is different, but the centerbore still puts the 2014 Interceptor rotor as unconventional.
How many brackets did you make?
Maybe it's .03. Either way it takes 2 minutes with a die grinder

RE: HOSE KITS
Yes I will have/get the proper hoses per Zach's design. And yes I'll make them available in both 2 and 4 line for your needs. They are identical to the others but for the ends and threads for the banjo bolts. (that M10 thing again)
No they are not on my web page at this time and I do not expect them to show up there. You will need to keep an eye on this thread and the cc I will copy to my own section. (not trying to hijack this one)
Please DO NOT reply about hoses to this thread. Rather see that cc in my vendor area.
They will be the end of this week AT THE EARLIEST...(keep your fingers crossed). However I'll be going out of town on Saturday for a week. I'll do my best to have them ready and let me wife mail them as she can and orders dictate.
