A BIG WEEK!

Posted 50K miles on Tuesday (bought at 43K in August - LOVIN' EVERY MINUTE!).

Drove the 'Rauder down to Baltimore on Thursday morning from South Joisey (depart at 450AM with a very clear 95 South).

I won't tell you the time of travel but I will tell you that......

I LOVE THIS CAR ON THE HIGHWAY!!!! - So responsive between 50 mph and upwards (always legal) and the suspension is so positive and accurate.

Just sharing.

Put a Tang Band 6.5" subwoofer in the factory enclosure... Tried taking a video with my phone, but as usual, phone camera just doesn't do this thing justice. It sounds all kinds of distorted when it's really not; the only stuff that even sounds remotely distorted is some wire or something rattling under the rear deck.

I'm impressed how deep a lil' 6.5 can sound.

_eh_1ZOUYuw

Doesn't sound anything as loud as the 2 MTX 7500 12s in the excursion, but for something that takes up no space and fits in the factory sub, it's excellent. I'd say it's a bit deeper than a tiny MTX road thunder 12" sub I have in my cherokee...

:D Finish, to wash, and clean interiors and to put some interesting things.

1- clean deeply the trunk with "bulldog" my little Shop-vac, and put the spare tire and the bag with tools and a freshner tree.

2- clean all glasses in and out with windex, ans Vaccum the driver/passenger floors.

3- Install the Magellan GPS, the Passport 8500 blue radar detector and the holder for my iphone.

4- leave in my Panther my old ipod 80GB with the itrip with plenty of music and movies too.

5- fill the glove compartment with some other things like Kleenex, travel wipes, other music transmitter device, etc.

Other ineteresting thing I discover was that I can use the lighter too to use 12V devices apart of the 12V that is under the dash, in my MERC-75 the lighter adapter do not accept electric devices just for cigarretes :rasta:, Tommorow I will visit Western Auto to buy the plactic floor mats front/rear with Ford logo on it, only minus is that they're black but doesn't matter it matches with... the tires ?, the GPS ?, the ipod ?, the key fob ?, the transmitter to open trunk, doors, panic ?, with me when I dress black ?, Darth Vader perhaps ?  ????

When replacing the axles a few weeks ago, fairlane347 pointed out my repeated brakestands had started some cracks in my rear rotors, so I replaced the rear pads and rotors. I've got it up on stands for a few days so I can clean the last of the diff fluid that got on the inside of my wheels and then paint the rotors and/or calipers.

I think I'm going to go silver or black for the rotors and/or calipers. Feeling lazy and might try to hand paint the rotors without taking the brakes off. We'll see how much energy I have this week.

Why wheel spacers? Your running stock wheels so why do you need spacers?

In a NA motor the platinum plugs are a waste of money. Use copper NGKs instead.

I think it was the platinums that they first came out with the +4 design on; but i don't see how +4 iridiums or others would be any less susceptible to this kind of damage.

MOTOWN
04-21-2011, 12:12 PM
irridium plugs have a center electrode that is stronger/harder than copper, or plantinum, and conducts current with less resistance than copper,or platinum, this electrode will not burn away like a conventional copper plug does over time, and will typicaly last 100k or better!

this is the best plug you can buy, and the most exspensive!

Well I decided it was going to be a nice day so I should wake up Mr. Black today. Battery was still totally dead from when I tried to start it in February so I temporarily pilfered the battery out of Ms. D's car. Gave it a quick crank and it started first try w/o any undo noises. I let it Idle for a few minutes and then took it for a slow ride to the gas station for some much needed air in the tyres. Now full of air I decided it was time for a car wash and rode through the automatic one in town. Polished it off with some clean micro fibers and decided if I ever find a big bag of money a paint job is in order. Much harder to see the flaws in Silver. Then took my clean car for a ride to repolish the brake rotors and air out the cob webs. Went on multiple types of roads and finished up with a spirited run on the local Interstate. Boy these engines pull from a roll. Parked it and put the battery back in the Mrs' MM and put my new (Christmas) Noah car cover on it as I noticed some birds flying about. Cover fits well and the new CAI I installed a couple of weeks ago worked well.:)

Gonna make a thread for it later on seeing I am taking pics of the work. Figured out a great way to mount the antennas for the GPS and Sirius set up so they can be on the roof and blend in better.

But still a ton of work to do before Carlisle and worried about getting it all done in time.

The rattle may be loose wires vibrating. Mine did this from day one brand new. I pulled the rear seat out and taped down every wire I could see using ultra strong packing tape. No more rattles. That was in 2004.

Pulled mine out of storage yesterday. Put the battery back in and started on 1st crank, per normal. Seems to be running great as usual, but I miss the rush I used to get going from the Aveo to the MM. I've been driving the LS8 since I was cleared to drive again. Na I do not have enough cash this year with going to Carlisle to use dynamat or anything like it right now. But I have plans to change the sub woofer and amplifier when I save up for it so maybe then.

But I did get the Boom Matt shallow speaker cups to put behind all of the speakers. When we did this on the Taurus the sound difference was awesome so I am sure I will be happy with that for now.

I also had rattles in the back but I found some busted screws and drill bits under the factory sound proofing under the rear seat when I was banging things to find them and also found some loose wires where the connectors were hitting the metal parts so I zip tied them all.

I worked on her till 8 p.m. last night to try and get it done and almost there now. Was a pain running all the wires for the antennas and connections.

Today I have to program the steering wheel controls as well for the SWI-Jack and mount the Sirus control box where I ran the wires to.

Just make sure with the GPS and Sirius antennas you want a good 6" of metal surface around them. It helps with localizing the signal.

I did 2 years of beta testing for XM radio and that was one of the tests I did many times over.

Today is putting on the new front Chin Spoiler and the new front License plate bracket.

A few years back someone who use to live on the top floor backed into the front license plate bracket and cracked it on me. Finally got around to getting a new one.

I just hope the entrance to the driveway isn't an issue for the chin spoiler.

I finally fixed something that has been driving me crazy.

I had this problem at WOT where I would get an awful burning smell in the cabin. At first I thought it was my fairly new cats breaking in, then I figured it was my trans belts slipping. It ended up being my drive belt slipping. The belt looked good but I noticed a little chatter from the tensioner @ idle, so today I installed a new tensioner, idler pully, and Gatorback belt and all is well. :burnout:

Today I have to bake them in the oven to cure the paint 250 deg. for 2 hours.

Now I will need to wait for another nice warm, dry day to do the color coat on all the parts then bake them as well.

And yes I will make a thread on this mod once it is done and I have all of the pictures of it step by step. :D

Thanks, I'm still not done with it. I'm going to be using some foil tape to add more reflection in it and I finally thought I got all the gauge needles corrected. Had my speedo SPOT ON with my scan gauge and GPS then driving home I get up to 70+ and look down and it's stuck sitting at 65.... FML. I've had the gauge cluster in and out 9 times in the past two days. lol

I don't know if I need to push the needle down some more or pull it out more. I'm going to buy another gauge cluster and either do a VW theme deep blue with bright red needles or a UV blacklight.

Trying hard to figure out why the SB trunk suddenly readjusted itself on the PS backwards towards the bumper. I came out of the Post Office and noticed the gap by the PS rear window was noticeably larger than the DS. Adjusted it back but the bolts were tight underneath and I can't see any movement underneath by the spare tire. Car wasn't hit either. One of life's little mysteries I guess.

If you pull the needles off sometimes they don't go back on exact as they came off. None of the gauges readjust themselves. I think the last time I had my needles off I had my fuel level reading just a hair lower and speedo reading 2mph faster. I'm having an issue with the speedo needle now, once it hits 65 mph it sticks and wont go any higher, I might just need to raise or lower the height of it on the motor pin needle that it connects to. Really don't feel like taking the dash apart again just for that cause its a small waste of time and slight PITA even though it's quite easy, just the hassle of doing it when I've already done it a bunch of times in the past 3 days.

It has been a very fun last couple of days.

Finally got around to taking the mud flaps off the Marauder. Ascetically, they bothered me … BUT, I am glad that they were on the car when it lived in Detroit.
Installed the Magnaflows, 18” … Love the sound. It has a mild growl to it now.
Installed the Gorilla Locks. I did not realize how the one locking lug nut looked different than the other 4 on the wheel. Now with the Gorilla’s on, they look stock, and you don’t even realize that they are locking lug nuts. Cleans that look up a bit.
While I had the wheels off, cleaned the inside of the rims off. No where near you anal retentive people that have to polish it, but it is cleaner and shinier.

I took the rubber plugs out of the backing plates on the rear brakes and loosened up the emergency brake shoes with a brake spoon while the rotor and hub soaked in penetrating fluid.

24537

24538

Then pulled the rear calipers off and hammered on the rear rotors till they broke free of the hub.

Used a brass wire wheel on my drill and cleaned up the axle hubs and mounting bracket for the caliper so I could mask every thing off and paint those parts to match the new brakes.

@ the same time did the clear coat on all the new parts so I can bake them in the oven tomorrow while I take apart the front brakes and clean and paint the hubs up front.

I used to own a fully modded Focus, but it wasn't a freak show with spoilers bigger than the car. Consider Kumho tires. I always loved them on my Foci. They stuck like glue and lasted. I wish I could get those in a matching F/R tire for my Marauder. I really miss the MPG too, the more I modded it, the better it got. 29MPG around town, 36 on the road. The FLM dealership referred to it as the "Firebreathing Focus".

The car came with Kumho tires from the factory. Those are the ones with the big bubbles in them. :(
Tire rack has a deal on them so thats probably the place we're gonna get them from.

Teehee! THANKS! I actually have to give credit to Paul for the look of the car. I was going to go with the sensible 4 door but Paul spotted the coupe and it had the monochrome look, spoiler sunroof... all thing my "sensible 4 dr" didn't have plus I got "you just had a granny sedan and it's only for 3 years. GET A FUN CAR!" So I did. :D

I like it. It IS fun and I really like the comradery I get from other Ford drivers (never experienced that with my Hyundai ). But like I said, I don't like the fact that I can feel every single bump and dip and it doesn't have that smooth ride like Paul's Fusion. I can feel the difference driving the 2 cars. But I LOOOOVE how I can fit into smaller parking spots and zip through traffic with it. I was also having issues with the throttle by wire and the fact that the pick up from dead stop wasn't there but it's gotten better. Overall, I DO like it. It's fun and I love the look of the car, but I'm glad I'll be giving it back in a year & a half. I don't think I can deal with the ride for too long. I like a big sturdy car with a smooth ride... Like the Marauder!! :D

Also the 390 T-Bird engines the Marauders had in the 1960's had gold air cleaners and valve covers on them.

So I am sticking with the original Mercury Marauder's looks basically and making it more like an anniversary car.

I had it clay barred and waxed. The local Turtle Wax did it for free for previously selling me a Turtle Wax "Ice" package that basically just seals in the dirt. I complained at how bad it looked and the manager said "Well, no one else complains, but you have a nice car, so we will clay bar it and wax it for free." They have no cleaner/wax if you can believe it. So, if you don't elect to clay bar it, they just seal in the dirt. Unbelievable!

Well, it would have been nice to have a 63 1/2 MM and a 04 MM, both in a color that Mercury calls red. The only time my DTR is red is in bright sunshine. I was quite surprised when I saw what I had purchased as it looked diferent from the promo pictures I had seen. The "pink" car was also called red by the owner. He had actually sold it new to a woman and then bought it from her estate when she passed away 30 years or so later. Too bad he wanted so much for it. :( IIRC $8K and it needed work to restore it.

Put new struts in the front along with the Addco sway bar. Sparta upper and lower control arms and watts link bars. TCE SS brake lines. Painted my front and rear calipers black along with the front brake dust shield. Addco rear sway bar and new back shocks. I worked on this series of mods from 9 am till dark yesterday and today, with the final 2 hours today spent trying to figure out the brakes. I have a problem, I bled all the brake lines with a motive pressurized bleeding kit until I got clean brake fluid through each caliper. I started with the back passenger side, then did the back drivers side followed by the front passenger side and then the front drivers side. I closed the bleeder, on each caliper, with 10 psi of pressure, but my brake pedal still goes to the floor when pressed. What did I do wrong? Is there a different process with a car that has ABS, I never had a problem with my older cars. Need help please. Thank You,

start with the drivers side (caliper closest to master cylinder) and work your way out

Okay, I had always did it starting with the farthest away from the master cylinder. Do I start with closest to the master cylinder because each caliper has its own line from the ABS block? I like to know why I have to things a certain way. I like to be edumicated.

starting with the caliper farthest from th m/c will not get all the air out of the lines, and your woking against your self (its counter productive)

Spent a good part of yesterday detailing the engine compartment getting ready for Carlisle. Also replaced the lugnut that I lost the SS cap on earlier. Did the clay bar, wax, and ICE treatment last weekend. I'll use Thursday this week to do all the minor finishing touches. Sure hope I don't have to run through the rain again on Friday morning heading north.

I am getting all the bugs off of her from last night! :mad2:

I was asked to go to the cruise night in Bristol yesterday before Carlisle and on the way home in the dark got hammered with bugs.

Oh well part of the season you just have to deal with still better than rain or snow.

Extensive detailing day. I pulled the rims off and cleaned the insides, then polished the rims, cleaned the wheel wells, suspension, waxed the brake calipers, polished the exhaust tips, polished the control arms, polished the exhaust pipes that can be seen from in between the rims (never knew they would clean up in the 6yrs of ownership), then compounded whatever fine scratches, clay bar and full polish. The engine and interior detail will come this week.

Lousy cell phone shot but you get the idea.
